Three easy ways to use Google
Jul 16, 2020Integrating technology into our classrooms is no longer optional. One lesson we learned from the pandemic was we may be required, on any given day, to instantly transition our physical classroom to a virtual one. Plus, utilizing technology ensures students who are not present keep abreast of what is going on in the classroom during their absence. Here are some easy ways to use Google Classroom in YOUR classroom.
1) Ask Questions in Google Classroom
Under the Classwork tab, click on the Create button and select Question. Note the options in the bottom right corner that allow students to reply to each other and/or edit their answers, enabling students to interact with each other as well as you. They can comment on each other's posts/answers, ask questions of each other, etc. For example, divide the class: half answer your question, and the other half ask deeper-level questions based on the first half's answers. Provide question stems from Blooms to scaffold. This is an excellent class opening activity that gives you time to take attendance, etc.
2) Collaborative Projects Using Google Docs OR Google Sheets
Designate team/partner/individual writing assignments on Google Docs. One student creates the document then shares it with the other members (Share link is located at the top right of the screen, above the document). Sharing permits all partners to see and work on the document simultaneously. Each student can view what the others are writing. Great for creating dialogue.
3) Peer Editing with Google Docs
Assign writing work on Google Docs. Sort class into groups or pairs with each individual student sharing their document with their fellow partner/group, etc. Upon completion of the first draft, students provide each other feedback on the document. For the most effective, appropriate results, furnish a list of comments that students choose from for their observations. Detailed commentary provides for more efficient revisions.
